Which cars would you like to see (back) in service at Crich?

by Christoph Heuer » 12.01.2008, 14:03

Hello everyone,

the subject line says it all. For a change we do not talk about realistic options, workshop capacity or money but just dreams.

Personally, I would like to see 106 return rather sooner than later. The upstairs seats are a bit awkward but with the electric brake it is a beautiful car to drive. Just put in the third brake notch coming down fom Glory Mine to let is coast gently and do not worry about you right arm.

What do you think?

Kind regards

Well, I would like to see 1282 back in service - I think if they ran both the Glasgow Streamliners together it would provide some great pics!

Out of trams in store, definitely the Dreadnought - come 59! I've never seen it in service (on account of it being withdrawn the year I was born!), and would like to see it back in action!

Out of trams that i've actually been on, definitely 602 - it's my favourite tram ever, it's one of only 4 trams with VAMBAC - and of only 2 in the UK, and it looks amazing! If only they'd gone into service!

And, just one more choice (well, 2!), would be New York 674 and Den Haag 1147 (has it ever run though?), as we don't actually have any operational PCC cars, yet we have a big display!

Where do I start!? Leeds 602 definitly should be running again, and soon - it is always such a big draw whenever it comes out, as is Blackpool 166, although I understand that one will be returned to service soon.

How about Newcastle 102? I'd love to see it repaired, it's a great people mover and a bit different from the other open-toppers in the operational fleet. Obviously Blackpool 59 is a big favourite with many people, but 102 would surely be the next best thing, and should be a lot cheaper and easier to get back into action.

I must agree!

I LOVE 602 as I said - surely if Crich can build AccessTrams, Restore Trams etc, they can fix a leaky roof?!?! Or just run it on sunny days!

Blackpool 166 - YES!!! This car is going to be repaired this year, can't wait!

Newcastle 102... I must also agree about the cost, and if anyone does want the Dreadnought, then this is a close as you can get in short term. Would be very popular too.

Dreadnought: I think we knoe my views on this tram car... Anyone who thinks it should be unrestored should be shot. I would love to see it running at Blackpool. Who know's? Boxcar 40's there!

Thanks,

602's leaky roof actually was fixed! I don't know why it didn't run last year - I believe there was a reason although it wasn't reported in the Journal or Conatct why. Good to see another big fan of that tram though, as it's one of my favourites.

and finally:

I don't have any pics of 59, 1147 or 674 in my collection as far as i'm aware, but i'll take a look!

Yes, I think that must be the case. I rode on it at Enthusiast's Day in 2003, but havn't seen it since. I believe (but can someone else PLEASE comment!) that the fault returned, but I guess we won't know any time soon.

I also doubt it will be commisioned for 2008, even though we have a shortage of all weather singles - Gateshead 5, Blackpool 167 and Leeds 602 come to mind - and 2 have wheel-rail interface problems!

Leeds 602

by Christoph Heuer » 27.01.2008, 20:01

Hello everyone,

As there is some uncertainty I forwarded the question on the current condition of 602 to the TMS Board and received some information from Malcolm Wright who was the Board member responsible at the time of the most recent work done to 602.

Malcolm wrote:

"Leeds 602 was completely repainted externally by the TMS staff painter Peter Malone, following the remedial work on the roof which, as far as I know doesn't leak. The painting is a beautiful job, and took from early November 2005 to mid July 2006 to do. The tram ran for seven days in 2006, the last day being Thursday 5th September.
It has not run since."

This should resolve the matter.

Kind regards

Christoph

Well there are so many trams to choose from, and each have their own merits and I'm sure we could all give an argument for everything being restored!

Personally as well as those such as Dreadnought 59 mentioned before I would love to see Leicester 76 running again. It is a local tram and I happened to spend three years of my life in Leicester at University so it kind of has a place in my heart!

Grimsby & Immingham 14 in service would be great as well, as there is just something about that tram!

I just hope that the next restoration is not another London or Leeds tram as we seem to have quite enough of those! (I know that a lot of funding comes from London which is why we get them :D )

restoration

by Nick » 28.01.2008, 00:36

Trams i would like to see run in the near future include the following

Blackpool 59 (Because its a 'intresting' vehicle in so many ways)

Leeds 602 (Mainly cause its a link between 1st and 2nd generation)

Leicester 76 (Just for the reversed stairs and the beauty thats inside)

Blackpool 5 (One man operation, perfect winter car)

MBRO 84 (Steam tram..say no more)

and CWJ 410 the sheffield motor tower wagon, just cause its something we don't represent at the moment.

However that is my wish list. We also have to consider that as a National institution we have curatorial issues over many vehicles, if they haven't been touched by anyone and are original then they should be conserved. This should certainly be the case with a tram such as Sheffield 264 where (as far as i'm aware without research) nothing other than a repaint has taken place in preservation.

Hello,

I have removed two posts at the request of a person involved as the post contained an inaccurate quote attributed to that person.

LCC 106

by Tom Foxon » 01.02.2008, 10:49

I agree with Christoph. Without 106 we have no car with the traditional English pattern of electric brake which all drivers are allowed to drive. 1622 has always been restricted to a favoured few. 106 is definitely my favourite tram.
